I was on the second floor of the Abernethy Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. The Garden of Wonders classroom full of students - all on pause from learning how seeds become plants or where squash comes from or measuring our bean stalks - in order to watch the historic inauguration on the small television mounted in the high corner of the room. Including poetry. I wonder what, if anything, sticks with them from that day. I know for me, this poem did.
